Hotel Dining in Japan: Buffet Reservations, Dress Codes & Family Visits

A hotel meal can be a memorable part of a trip to Japan. Start by separating two decisions: where you will stay, and where you will eat. This guide helps you check the details before booking a hotel restaurant. For the latest conditions, use the restaurant’s official website and the specific plan you select.

1. Choose the kind of meal you want

A buffet, a set-course meal and afternoon tea offer different experiences and serving times. Decide on your date, lunch or dinner, party size and budget before comparing plans. For a birthday or anniversary, check whether a message plate, a particular table or other extras are included in the price.

2. A room booking is not a restaurant reservation

Booking a hotel room does not necessarily secure a table at your preferred restaurant. Even with a breakfast-inclusive stay, check the breakfast venue, serving times and whether children’s meals are included. If you are not staying at the hotel, check the restaurant’s rules for non-resident diners.

3. Check these details before confirming

  • Price: Is it per person or for the whole party? Are tax, service charges and drinks included?
  • Time: Check the start time in Japan local time, any dining time limit and the last admission time.
  • Children: Check age bands, child prices and whether infants must be included in the reservation.
  • Dietary needs: Ask about allergies, restricted ingredients and possible cross-contact during preparation.
  • Dress: Check the individual restaurant’s dress code; restaurants within one hotel may have different rules.
  • Changes: Read the cancellation deadline, fees, party-size change rules and no-show policy.

4. Keep the details handy while travelling

Save your confirmation email, reservation number, restaurant name and address. A request entered in a booking form is not necessarily guaranteed. If a seating arrangement or dietary requirement is essential, wait for the restaurant’s confirmation. Keep its contact details in case you are running late.
